MARIE SOUVESTRE

Marie Souvestre was a fierce supporter of education for young women. She championed education and social services to the urban poor. She founded the girls' boarding school Les Ruches (the beehives), where Eleanor Roosevelt received her schooling. ER and Souvestre remained close even after ER left the school to make her social debut. ER credited Souvestre with building her confidence and shaping her into the women she wanted to be. Souvestre's liberal minded lifestyle and high academic standards makes her stand out among women of her time.
